North Tyrol

North Tyrol,rarelyNorth Tirol(German:Nordtirol), is the main part of the Austrian federal stateTyrol,located in the western part of the country. The other part of the federal state isEast Tyrol,which also belongs to Austria, but doesn't share a border with North Tyrol.

Besides those two regions, the historical region ofTyrolfor many centuries also includedSouth Tyroland the historical region ofWelschtirol,which were annexed byItalyafterWorld War I.With that, North Tyrol and East Tyrol were effectively cut off from each other. In theaftermath of World War I,there was aserious movementto unify North Tyrol withBavaria.[1]

North Tyrol bordersSalzburg Statein the east, the Germanfederal stateof Bavaria in the north,Vorarlbergto the west, theSwiss cantonofGraubünden(Grison) to the southwest, andSouth TyrolinItalyto the south. The federal state capital isInnsbruck.
