Nursing research
Nursing researchis research that provides evidence used to supportnursing practices.Nursing, as an evidence-based area of practice, has been developing since the time ofFlorence Nightingaleto the present day, where many nurses now work as researchers based inuniversitiesas well as in thehealth caresetting.[citation needed]
Nurse educationplaces focus upon the use ofevidencefromresearchin order to rationalise nursinginterventions.InEnglandandWales, courts may determine if a nurse actedreasonablybased upon whether their intervention was supported byresearch.
Areas of research
[edit]Nursing research falls largely into two areas:[citation needed]
- Quantitative researchis based in theparadigmoflogical positivismand is focused upon outcomes for clients that are measurable, generally usingstatistics. The dominantresearch methodis therandomised controlled trial.
- Qualitative researchis based in the paradigm ofphenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and others, and examines the experience of those receiving or delivering the nursing care, focusing, in particular, on themeaningthat it holds for the individual. The research methods most commonly used areinterviews, case studies, focus groupsandethnography
Recently in theUK,action researchhas become increasingly popular in nursing.
Evidence-based quality improvement practices
[edit]In 2008, the Agency for Healthcare Research and QualityAHRQcreated theAHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchangeto document and share health care quality improvement programs, including hundreds of profiles featuring nursing innovations.[1]Each of the nursing profiles contained in this collection contains an evidence rating that assesses how strong the relationship is between the innovative practice and the results described in the profile.[2]Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is both a goal and approach in nursing, however, there are nurse-related barriers to evidence based-practice such as limited knowledge of EBP and work overload.[3]
