Opole SilesiaorOpolian Silesia[1](Polish:Śląsk Opolski,also known asOpolszczyzna,German:Oppelner Schlesien,Silesian:Ôpolski Ślōnsk,Czech:Opolské Slezsko), is a loosely definedhistorical regionofPoland,part ofUpper Silesia.

Throughout a large part of its history, the region had been ruled by theDuchy of Opoleand otherSilesian Duchies,formed as a result of the medieval fragmentation ofPiast-ruled Poland. Following theSilesian Warsthe region found itself withinPrussia,and from 1871 it was also part of Germany. Following Germany's defeat inWorld War IIin 1945, in accordance with theOder–Neisse line,Opole Silesia became again part of Poland.
