Orpheo McCord(born 1979) is an American composer and percussionist. He is an original member ofEdward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros,and a former member ofThe Fall,Fool's GoldandCass McCombs.His debut solo album,Recovery Inhale,was released on January 26, 2018. His second album,Music for Ketamine Therapy Vol. I,was released on October 8, 2023.

Early life and education[edit]

McCord attendedBerklee College of Music,graduating in 2002.[1]He has spent time inGhanastudying African percussion,[2]and has also studied percussion inMali,CubaandMorocco.[3]

His father Joseph McCord has said he was named after the musicianOrpheusfromGreek mythology.[4]Joseph McCord was a professionalmimewho went by the name Merlin, and was one ofKen Kesey'sMerry Pranksters.[5]

Career[edit]

The Fall (2006-07)[edit]

In May 2006 after several members of U.K. BandThe Fallquit mid-tour, McCord was recruited by frontmanMark E. Smithto join The Fall along with guitaristTim Presleyand bassist Rob Barbato.[6][7]McCord toured the US and Europe with the band,[1]and was a member of The Fall for their 26th albumReformation Post TLC(2007), as well as the live albumLast Night at The Palais,recorded in 2007 and released two years later.[8][9]The 2006-07 lineup was a pleasant one for The Fall, absent the infighting that marked most of the band's numerous incarnations.[8]In his 2008 autobiographyRenegade,Smith called McCord the best of the more than a dozen drummers The Fall had up to that point, with an openness to new ideas and straightforward playing that avoided cliches.[10]

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (2007-present)[edit]

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroswere formed in Los Angeles in 2007 by frontmanAlex Ebert.McCord met Ebert at a mutual friend's party and then again while jogging inElysian Park,where Ebert asked him to join the band. They released their debut albumUp From Belowin 2009, followed byHerein 2012, aself-titledalbum in 2013, andPersonAin 2016.[5][11][12][13]The group won theGrammy Award for Best Music Filmin 2013 for the documentaryBig Easy Express.[14]McCord incorporates African influences in his work with the band, using a hybridization of drum set,marimba,conga,djembeandelectronic percussion.[15][16]

McCord played marimba on Alex Ebert's score for the 2013 filmAll Is Lost,which won theGolden Globe Award for Best Original Score.[17][18]

Solo work[edit]

On January 26, 2018, McCord's debut solo album,Recovery Inhale,was released on Sound Creature Records. The album is composed of "hypnotic instrumental pieces... treading the line between new age and minimalist ambient music."[3][19]"Ghost Ship", the first single, was released in December 2017. On the album, McCord performs all instruments, predominantly effectedmarimbaandkalimba.[3]

McCord's second solo album,Music for Ketamine Therapy Vol. I,was released on Sound Creature Records on October 8, 2023.[20]

Other work[edit]

McCord has intermittently toured as drummer forCass McCombssince 2007 and has played on four of his albums.[1][21]He was formerly the drummer and percussion leader inFool's Gold,an LA pop band whose music incorporates African rhythms.[2][22]In 2010, he played withHarper Simonas a duo at theFestival au DésertinMali,outside ofTimbuktu.They also performed there with theTuaregbandTinariwen.[23]In 2014, McCord andMikael Jorgensen(pianist/keyboardist forWilco) formed the duo Prism Break, inspired by early 1970s German experimental rock.[24]McCord has also performed withIma Robot,[15]The Flaming Lips,[25]Jack Johnson,[26]DawesandHe's My Brother She's My Sister.[27]

Chromasonic[edit]

Chromasonic, founded in 2019 by McCord, Joel Shearer,Johannes Girardoniand Harriet Girardoni, is a series of immersive light and sound experiences to inspire expanded states of awareness and connection. The group created Chromasonic Refrequencing, a real-time, sensory technology that synchronizes sound with color-saturated light, making sound visible and light audible. There have been installations in California and Colorado, and there is a permanent site in Venice, California, called Satellite One.[28][29][30]

Personal life[edit]

McCord is based inOjai, California,[1][31]where he lives with his wife Rachel Kolar (ofHe's My Brother She's My Sister) and their two children.[4][32]
