Paul Lawrence Brady(born September 28, 1927)[1]is an Americancivil rightsadvocate, author and formerfederal administrative law judge,the firstAfrican-Americanto achieve this position in 1972. He retired in 1997.[2]

Biography

Born inFlint, Michigan,[1]he graduated fromFlint Central High School.After high school, he served in theUnited States Navy.He was a private practice judge, aSocial Security Administrationhearing examiner and a trial attorney for theFederal Power Commission.He was a graduate of theUniversity of Michigan,theUniversity of KansasandWashburn University.[2][3]

Brady publishedA Certain Blindnesschronicling his ancestors history on their arrival in the United States,[4]and received many accolades from civil rights groups during his career.[2]Brady is a great-nephew ofBass Reeves,who was among the firstAfrican Americansto receive a commission as aDeputy U.S. Marshalwest of theMississippi River,and the second husband ofXernona Clayton,acivil rightsleader.[2][3]
