Paul Malone Allen(born September 1951) is an American cellularimmunologistand current Robert L. Kroc Professor of Pathology and Immunology atWashington University School of MedicineinSt. Louis.Allen holds prestigious MERIT status with the National Institutes of Health.

Education and career

Paul Allen received hisbachelor'sdegree in 1974 from theUniversity of Michiganfollowed by amaster'sdegree in 1977 and adoctoral degreein 1981 withJohn Niederhuberand a thesis titled "Functional and serological examination of the central portion of the I region of the H-2 gene complex", both from the University of Michigan.[1][2][3]He completed a pathology research fellowship at Harvard Medical School withEmil Unanueand joined the Washington University faculty in 1985.[1]

From 2005 to 2006, Allen served as the president of theAmerican Association of Immunologists.[4]He is a member of the editorial board forImmunity.

Research

Allen's work specializes in the study of howT lymphocytesrecognizeantigensand initiate animmune response.He andEmil R. Unanuewere responsible for the discovery thatantigen-presenting cellspresent antigens to bind to a special group of molecules known as themajor histocompatibility complex.[1]
