Paul Joseph Jean Poupard(born 30 August 1930) is a French prelate of theCatholic Churchwho has been aCardinalsince 1985. He held positions in theRoman Curiafor more than 25 years, serving as President of thePontifical Council for Culturefrom 1988 to 2007 and briefly as President of thePontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Biography

Poupard was born inBouzillé,Maine-et-Loire. He studied at theminor seminaryinBeaupréau,University of Angers,andÉcole Pratique des Hautes Étudesof theSorbonne(from where he obtained hisdoctorates in theologyand history). Poupard wasordainedto the priesthood by Bishop Stanislas Courbe on 18 December 1954,[1]and then taught at theMongazon School.After entering the French section of theSecretariat of Statein 1959, he was raised to the rank ofChaplain of His Holinesson 20 March 1965, and ofHonorary Prelate of His Holinesson 29 November 1971. Poupard wasRectorof theInstitut Catholique de Parisfrom 1972 to 1980, and also served asvice-presidentof the Society ofFrench Ecclesiastical History.

On 2 February 1979, he was appointedAuxiliary Bishopof Paris andTitular BishopofUsula.Poupard received hisepiscopal consecrationon the following 6 April from CardinalFrançois Marty,with ArchbishopAndré Paillerand Bishop Jean Orchampt serving asco-consecrators,in theChurch of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.A year and a half later, in 1980, he received a position in theRoman Curia,the Holy See's governing body, as Pro-President of the Secretariat for Non-Believers, later (in 1988) renamed thePontifical Council for Culture.In 1985, his title was changed to president, on his becomingCardinal-DeaconofS. Eugenio.After thesede vacanteperiod that followed the death ofPope John Paul II,Pope Benedict XVIreappointed him to the same position and, on 11 March 2006, also named him President of thePontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.[2]

Some of his writings have been translated into languages includingArabic,Bulgarian,Chinese,Croatian,English, German,Hungarian,Italian, Japanese,Korean,Portuguese,Russian, and Spanish. He holds doctorates intheologyand history from theSorbonne,as well as honorary doctorates from the Universities ofAix-en-Provence,Fu Jen,Louvain,Kyoto,Santiago de Chile,Puebla de los Angelesand theBabes-Bolyai University/Cluj-Napoca.

In 1996 he was appointed Cardinal-Priest ofSanta Prassede.He was one of thecardinal electorswho participated in the2005 papal conclavethat electedPope Benedict XVI.In September 2007 Pope Benedict replaced him as President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue with CardinalJean-Louis Tauranand as President of the Pontifical Council for Culture withGianfranco Ravasi.
