The second season of the Americansuperherotelevision seriesPeacemakeris based on theDC Comicscharacterof the same name.It is set in theDC Universe(DCU) and serves as a "soft reboot"of the series, which started as a spin-off from the 2021DC Extended Universe(DCEU) filmThe Suicide Squad.The season continues the story ofjingoisticmercenary Christopher Smith / Peacemaker. It is produced byDC StudioswithJames Gunnasshowrunner.

John Cenastars as the title character, reprising his role fromThe Suicide Squad,withDanielle Brooks,Freddie Stroma,Jennifer Holland,Steve Agee,Frank Grillo,Sol Rodríguez,David Denman,andTim Meadowsalso starring. The season was ordered in February 2022, with Gunn set to write and direct all eight episodes. Filming was expected to begin in 2023, but work was put on hold when Gunn was made co-CEO of DC Studios and switched focus to the filmSuperman(2025). The spin-off seriesWallerwas then prioritized over the season, butWallerwas delayed by the2023 Hollywood labor disputesand in March 2024, Gunn announced that the season would now come first. Filming began the next month, taking place simultaneously withSupermanatTrilith StudiosinAtlanta, Georgia.

The season is set to premiere on the streaming serviceMaxand consist of eight episodes.

David Denmanhas been cast in an undisclosed role.[9]Peacemaker's pet bald eagle, Eagly, returns from the first season.[12]

James Gunn,creator andshowrunnerof theDC Extended Universe(DCEU) seriesPeacemaker,said in August 2021 that he wanted to make a second season and was committed to doing so if the series was renewed.[13]He reiterated this after thefirst seasonpremiered in January 2022, despite he and starJohn Cenanot yet having deals to return for a second season and Gunn wanting to take a break after a busy few years.[14][15]Gunn did not formally agree to make a second season until he had worked out what he wanted the overall character arcs to be, as he and Cena did not want to agree to something that they would not love to make.[16]Streaming serviceHBO Max(later renamed Max) officially announced the second season in February 2022, with Gunn set to write and direct all episodes.[5][17]He said it would explore the repercussions, good and bad, of the first season's events.[18]

Discovery, Inc.andWarner Bros.' parent companyWarnerMediamerged in April 2022 to becomeWarner Bros. Discovery(WBD), led by president and CEODavid Zaslav.The new company was expected to restructureDC Entertainmentand Zaslav began searching for an equivalent toMarvel StudiospresidentKevin Feigeto lead the new subsidiary.[19]After the surprise cancellation of DC'sBatgirlfilm by WBD in August, Gunn said the second season ofPeacemakerwas "safe",[20]and would begin filming in 2023.[21]Gunn and producerPeter Safranwere announced as the co-chairs and co-CEOs of the newly formedDC Studiosat the end of October 2022.[22]A week after starting their new roles, the pair had begun working with a group of writers to develop an eight-to-ten-year plan for a newDC Universe(DCU) that would be a "soft reboot"of the DCEU.[23][24][25]Gunn and Safran said some cast members would return from their filmThe Suicide Squadand the first season ofPeacemakerin the DCU, and a "rough memory" of those events would remain.[26]Because Gunn was busy with his new responsibilities, the second season ofPeacemakerwas put on hold by January 2023.[27]In February, Gunn said the series was delayed by his work on the first DCU film,Superman(2025), but it was not cancelled and would be made after the spin-off seriesWaller.[28]He later clarified that the second season ofPeacemakerwas his next project afterSuperman,[29][30]and said it would be part of the DCU'sChapter One: Gods and Monstersslate of content.[31]

Gunn said in October 2023 that the season would address its change from the DCEU continuity to the DCU continuity.[32]In March 2024, he clarified that the first season was notcanonto the DCU and said the second season would be continuing from the events ofSupermaninstead.[33]At that time, he revealed thatWallerhad been delayed by the2023 Hollywood labor disputesand the second season ofPeacemakerwould now be made first. Production was set to take place simultaneously withSupermanlater in 2024, in the interest of getting the season ready as soon as possible, so Gunn was no longer able to direct all of the episodes.[34]He ultimately directed three episodes, including the first,[1]withGreg MottolaandPeter Sollettalso directing.[2][3]

Writing

Gunn was writing the season by October 2023, following the conclusion of the2023 Writers Guild of America strike,[35]and he finished writing all eight episodes by early February 2024.[4]

Casting

John Cena confirmed that he would be returning asPeacemakerfor the second season when it was officially ordered in February 2022.[5]In April 2023, when announcing the cast of the DCU animated seriesCreature Commandos(2024), Gunn said there were plans for some of the voice actors to reprise their roles in live-action DCU projects and specifically highlightedFrank Grilloas being cast asRick Flag Sr.across all DCU media.[36]That July, Gunn saidFreddie Stromawould reprise his first-season role asAdrian Chase / Vigilantein the DCU.[7]Also reprising their roles from the first season areDanielle BrooksasLeota Adebayo,Jennifer HollandasEmilia Harcourt,andSteve AgeeasJohn Economos.[6]In May 2024, Gunn announced that Grillo would be reprising his role as Flag throughout the second season ofPeacemaker.[8]Sol Rodríguez,David Denman,andTim Meadowswere cast the following month, with Rodríguez portrayingSasha Bordeauxand Meadows cast as Langston Fleury.[9][10]Sollett indicated in July thatJoel Kinnamanwas reprising his role asRick Flag Jr.fromThe Suicide Squadin the season.[3]

Filming

Gunn said in March 2024 that filming was scheduled to begin later that year, simultaneously with production onSuperman,[34]atTrilith StudiosinAtlanta, Georgia.[37]Filming began on April 13, with Gunn doing a "pre-shoot" on a Saturday to work around hisSupermanfilming commitments.[38]He was directing three of the episodes and had hired three other directors for the season,[1][38]includingGreg Mottola,[10]who directed the second and third episodes,[2]andPeter Sollett,who directed the fourth episode.[3]Principal photographyfor the season is reportedly taking place between June and September 2024.[39][third-party source needed]

Title sequence

After the first season's opening title sequence received positive responses, Gunn said they wanted to "up [their] game" for the second season.[40]Charissa Barton returned to choreograph the second season's title sequence.[41]
