Petra Schwille(born 25 January 1968 inSindelfingen[1]) is a German professor and a researcher in the area ofbiophysics. Since 2011, she has been a director of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biophysics at theMax Planck Institute for Biochemistryin Martinsried, Germany.[2][3] She is known for her ground-laying work in the field offluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy,[4][5]and numerous contributions on modelmembranes.[6]Her current research focuses around bottom-up approaches to building anartificial cellwithin a broader area ofsynthetic biology.[2][7]In 2010, Schwille received theGottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize.[8]

Education

[edit]

Schwille graduated with aDiplomain physics from theUniversity of Göttingenin 1993.[9] She worked toward her doctoral degree in physics at theMax Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistryin Göttingen, Germany, and received her degree fromTechnical University of Braunschweigin 1996, with a thesis onfluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy.

Career

[edit]

Schwille worked as a postdoctoral researcher atCornell Universityin 1997, and returned to theMax Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistryin Göttingen to a research group leader position in 1999.[6] She became a professor of biophysics atTU Dresdenin 2002.[8] In 2012, Schwille became the director of the research department "Cellular and Molecular Biophysics" at theMax Planck Institute of Biochemistryin Martinsried, Germany,[6]as well as an Honorary Professor in physics atLudwig Maximilian University of Munich.[9]She is also a chief co-coordinator ofMaxSynBio,a research network of theMax Planck Societyforsynthetic biology.[10]

Schwille developed the"two-photon cross-correlation spectroscopy"method with which fundamental cellular processes can be explored.[11]

Schwille has been a member of the scientific Board of Trustees of theHeinrich Wieland Prizesince 2011.[12]
