Phi Gamma Nu(ΦΓΝ) is a co-edbusiness fraternityin the United States. It was founded as a sorority atNorthwestern Universityin 1924.[1]

History

Phi Gamma Nu was founded onFebruary 17, 1924at theChicagocampus of Northwestern University. The founders were:[1][2]

  • Mary Chard Nalbach
  • Helen Vogel Purcell
  • Celeste Weyl

Phi Gamma Nu was established as a sorority for women pursuing studies in business. It went national in October 1927 with the addition of theBeta chapterat Boston University.[3]Its national publication,The Magazine of Phi Gamma Nu,was first published in October 1930.[3]It became a member of the Women's Professional Pan-Hellenic Association on February 7, 1937.[3]

The sorority spent the next fifty years operating in much the same way but the organization changed to a co-ed in 1974 due to theTitle IXact.[3]While Phi Gamma Nu began accepting male members in 1974, the National Chapter Congress changed the name of Phi Gamma Nu Sorority to Phi Gamma Nu Fraternity to comply with Title IX until 1981.[1][3]

The fraternity was a charter member of theProfessional Fraternity Association.[4]

Symbols

Phi Gamma Nu's colors are cardinal red and gold. Its flower is the red rose.

Currently, Phi Gamma Nu has eighteen active collegiate chapters.[5]
