Philip Goldsworthy(c. 1737 – 1801), was aBritish Armyofficer. He was aMember of ParliamentforWiltonand chiefequerrytoKing George III.[1]Goldsworthy was aLieutenant Generaland Colonel ofThe Royals.
Personal life and family[edit]
Goldsworthy was the second son of Burrington Goldsworthy, British consul atLeghornand laterCadiz,and his wifePhilippia Vanbrughniece ofSir John Vanbrugh.He was baptised at Leghorn on the 18 October 1737.[1]
Military career[edit]
Goldsworthy was commissioned as a cornet in the 1st Dragoons in 1756. He was promoted tolieutenantin 1760, tocaptainin 1768 and tomajorin 1776. He went on to be promoted tolieutenant colonelin 1779 and tocolonelin 1784 and was appointed chief equerry (to the King) andclerk martialon 9 March 1788.[1]He was then promoted tomajor generalin 1793 and tolieutenant generalin 1799. He served as colonel of1st (Royal) Regiment of Dragoonsfrom 23 January 1794 until his death.[1]
Parliament[edit]
He represented theparliamentary boroughofWiltoninWiltshireduring two terms in theParliament of Great Britainand shortly in theParliament of the United Kingdom.He served from 2 February 1785 to January 1788, and 15 February 1794 to 4 January 1801.[1]
Posterity[edit]
He died unmarried at his seat Wilton Wiltshire 4 January 1801.[1]
