Pierre Villard(born on 26 July 1958Saint-Étienne– 25 January 2023Riom) was a French historian and archaeologist of theAncient Near East,Professor at theUniversité Clermont-Auvergneand member of the Archeorient laboratory - UMR 5133French National Centre for Scientific ResearchCNRS,Lumière University Lyon 2.[1]
Life
[edit]Pierre was admitted to theÉcole normale supérieure de Saint-Cloudin 1978.[1]Villard defended his doctoral thesis in June 1986, prepared at theParis 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Universityunder the supervision ofPaul Garelli,a specialist in the Assyrian world. The dissertation, entitledL'esprit de cour et le style des courtisans dans l'Assyrie des Sargonides,examined relations between Assyrian kings and their courtiers, particularly magicians and astrologers, from the reign ofSargon II(721-705 BC) to that ofAssurbanipal(668-627 BC).[2]Throughout his career, Pierre maintained a predilection for theNeo-Assyrian periodand became a recognized authority in this field, while continuing to conduct studies on Mari.[1]
In 1988, Pierre was electedMaître de conférencesat the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he taught classical ancient history, Near Eastern history, Akkadian language and cuneiform writing for twelve years.[2]From early 1990, together with Francis Joannès, he was the editorial secretary of the journalNouvelles Assyriologiques Brèves et Utilitaires(NABU), joining the editorial board in 1998.[1]
In January 2000, Pierre Villard defended hisHabilitation to Supervise Researchat the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne with a dissertation whose title,De Mari à Ninive,underlined the two poles of his research;Dominique Charpinwas the advisor.[2]In June of the same year, he was elected Professor of Ancient History at theUniversité Blaise-Pascal(Clermont II) in Clermont-Ferrand, now theUniversité Clermont-Auvergne,introducing the history of the Ancient East to the establishment, after Olivier Rouault had developed, from 1997 to 1999, the archaeology of the Ancient Near East in the History of Art department.[1]Villard also became a member of the Archéoriente team of the Maison de l'Orient Méditérranéen of Lyon II.[3]
