Thegens Pontilienawas an obscureplebeianfamily atancient Rome.No members of thisgensappear in history, but a few are mentioned in inscriptions.
Origin
[edit]ThenomenPontilienusappears to be formed fromPontilius,another nomen gentilicium. ThephilologistGeorge Davis Chase describes a class of such nomina, ending in-enusand nearly always derived from other gentile names, rather than places.[1]The root of the name appears to be theOscanpraenomenPompoorPomptus,a cognate of theLatinpraenomenQuintus.Thus,Pontilienusand similar nomina, such asPompiliusandPomponiaare the Oscan equivalents of Latin names such asQuinctiusandQuinctilius.[2]
