Aschoolis both theeducational institutionandbuildingdesigned to providelearning spacesandlearning environmentsfor theteachingofstudentsunder the direction ofteachers.Most countries have systems of formaleducation,which is sometimescompulsory.In these systems, students progress through a series of schools that can be built and operated by both government and private organization. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in theRegional termssection below) but generally includeprimary schoolfor young children andsecondary schoolfor teenagers who have completedprimary education.An institution wherehigher educationis taught is commonly called auniversity collegeoruniversity.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (elementary in the U.S.) and secondary (middle school in the U.S.) education.Kindergartenorpreschoolprovide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University,vocational school,collegeorseminarymay be available after secondary school. TheRoyal National College for the Blind(RNC) is aco-educationalspecialist residential college offurther educationbased in the English city ofHereford.Students who attend the college are aged 16 to 25 andblindor partially sighted. They can study a wide range of qualifications at RNC, from academic subjects such as English and Mathematics to more vocational topics such as Massage and Complementary Therapies. Alongside regular further education subjects and vocational training, the college offers training in mobility, assistive technology, Braille, independent living skills and personal development.

Founded in 1872 in London as the Royal Normal College and Academy for the Blind, the college had a number of homes before moving to its campus in Hereford; it was renamed The Royal National College for the Blind in the late 1970s. It has been a pioneer in the education of visually impaired people in Britain since the Victorian era, and, as of 2010, is the only college for visually impaired students in the United Kingdom to have been awardedBeacon Statusin recognition of its outstanding teaching and learning. John Dewey(/ˈdi/;October 20, 1859 – June 1, 1952) was an Americanphilosopher,psychologist,andeducational reformer.He was one of the most prominent American scholars in the first half of the twentieth century.

The overriding theme of Dewey's works was his profound belief indemocracy,be it in politics, education, or communication and journalism. As Dewey himself stated in 1888, while still at theUniversity of Michigan,"Democracy and the one, ultimate,ethical idealof humanity are to my mind synonymous. "Dewey considered two fundamental elements—schools andcivil society—to be major topics needing attention and reconstruction to encourage experimental intelligence and plurality.
