TheHarzis the second highest mountain range inGermany'sCentral Uplandsafter theOre Mountainsand extends across parts ofLower Saxony,Saxony-AnhaltandThuringia.The nameHarzderives from theMiddle High GermanwordHardtorHart(mountain forest). The Harz has the highest mountain in northwestern Germany, the legendaryBrocken,which is 1,141 metres (3,743 ft) above sea level and was the site of a former Sovietlistening postduring theCold War.The Harz also hosts the highest dam in Germany, the 106 m highRappbode Dam.The region has a high level of snow and rainfall, and its network of lakes and dams provide drinking water to the surrounding towns and cities as well as flood protection. Harz National Parkis anature reservein theGermanfederal states ofLower SaxonyandSaxony-Anhalt.It comprises portions of the westernHarzmountain range, extending fromHerzbergandBad Lauterbergat the southern edge toBad HarzburgandIlsenburgon the northern slopes. 95% of the area is covered with forests, mainly withspruceandbeechwoods, including severalbogs,graniterocks and creeks. The park is part of theNatura 2000network of theEuropean Union.

In its current form, the park was created on January 1, 2006, by the merger of the Harz National Park in Lower Saxony, established in 1994, and the Upper Harz National Park in Saxony-Anhalt, established in 1990. As the formerinner German borderran through the Harz, large parts of the range were prohibited areas, that apart from the fortifications had remained completely unaffected for decades.
