Hyderabad(/ˈhaɪdərəbæd/HY-dər-ə-bad;Telugu:[ˈɦaɪ̯daraːbaːd],Urdu:[ˈɦɛːdəɾaːbaːd],ISO:Haidarābād) is the capital and largest city of theIndian stateofTelangana.It occupies 650 km2(250 sq mi) on theDeccan Plateaualong the banks of theMusi River,in the northern part of Southern India. With an average altitude of 542 m (1,778 ft), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain aroundartificial lakes,including theHussain Sagarlake, predating the city's founding, in the north of the city centre. According to the2011 census of India,Hyderabad is thefourth-most populous city in Indiawith a population of6.9 millionresidents within the city limits, and has a population of9.7 millionresidents in themetropolitan region,making it thesixth-most populous metropolitan areain India. With an output ofUS$74 billion, Hyderabad has the fifth-largest urban economy in India.
Until the19th century,Hyderabad was known for thepearl industryand was nicknamed the "City of Pearls", and was the only trading centre forGolconda diamondsin the world. Many of the city's historical and traditionalbazaarsremain open. Hyderabad's central location between theDeccan Plateauand theWestern Ghats,and industrialisation throughout the20th centuryattracted major Indian research, manufacturing, educational and financial institutions. Since the 1990s, the city has emerged as anIndian hub of pharmaceuticals and biotechnologyand information technology. The formation of thespecial economic zonesofHardware ParkandHITEC City,dedicated to information technology, has encouraged leading multinationals to set up operations in Hyderabad. (Full article...)

TheQutub Shahi Tombsare located in the Ibrahim Bagh (garden precinct), close to the famousGolconda FortinHyderabad, India.They contain thetombsand mosques built by the various kings of theQutub Shahi dynasty.The galleries of the smaller tombs are of a single storey while the larger ones are two-storied. In the centre of each tomb is a sarcophagus which overlies the actual burial vault in a crypt below. The domes were originally overlaid with blue and green tiles, of which only a few pieces now remain.
