Kuwait,officially theState of Kuwait,is a country inWest Asia.It is situated in the northern edge ofEastern Arabiaat the tip of thePersian Gulf,borderingIraqtothe northandSaudi Arabiatothe south.With a coastline of approximately 500 km (311 mi), Kuwait also shares amaritime borderwithIran.Most of the country's population reside in theurban agglomerationofKuwait City,the capital and largest city., Kuwait has a population of 4.82 million, of which 1.53 million areKuwaiti citizenswhile the remaining 3.29 million areforeign nationalsfrom over 100 countries.

Historically, most of present-day Kuwait was part of ancientMesopotamia.Before thediscovery of oil reservesin 1938, the country was a regional trade port; from 1946 to 1982, the country underwent large-scale modernization, largely based on income fromoil production.In the 1980s, Kuwait experienced a period of geopolitical instability and an economic crisis following thestock market crash.In 1990, Kuwait wasinvadedand subsequentlyannexedbyIraqunder the leadership ofSaddam Husseinfollowing disputes over oil production. TheIraqi occupation of Kuwaitended on 26 February 1991, followingmilitary interventionby acoalitionled by the United States and several other nations.

Like most otherArab states in the Persian Gulf,Kuwait is anemirate;theemiris the head of state and the rulingAl Sabahfamily dominates the country's political system. Kuwait's official state religion is Islam, specifically theMaliki schoolof Sunni Islam. Kuwait is ahigh-income economy,backed by the world'ssixth largest oil reserves.Kuwaiti popular culture, in the form of theatre, radio, music, and television soap opera, is exported to neighboringGulf Cooperation Council(GCC) states. Al Jahra Sporting Club(Arabic:نادي الجهراء الرياضي) is aKuwaitiprofessionalfootballclub based inJahra.They won theKuwaiti Premier Leagueonce, in 1990. They participated in the Kuwaiti Premier League 21 times, most recently in the 2007–08 season. Al Jahra reached theKuwait Emir Cupfinal twice in recent times, 1996 and 2002, where they lost toAl Arabi1–2 andKuwait Club0–1.
