Aschoolis both theeducational institutionandbuildingdesigned to providelearning spacesandlearning environmentsfor theteachingofstudentsunder the direction ofteachers.Most countries have systems of formaleducation,which is sometimescompulsory.In these systems, students progress through a series of schools that can be built and operated by both government and private organization. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in theRegional termssection below) but generally includeprimary schoolfor young children andsecondary schoolfor teenagers who have completedprimary education.An institution wherehigher educationis taught is commonly called auniversity collegeoruniversity.

In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary (elementary in the U.S.) and secondary (middle school in the U.S.) education.Kindergartenorpreschoolprovide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University,vocational school,collegeorseminarymay be available after secondary school. Caulfield Grammar Schoolis aprivate,co-educational,Anglican,International Baccalaureate,dayandboarding school,located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1881 as a boys' school, Caulfield Grammar began admitting girls exactly one hundred years later. The school amalgamated withMalvern Memorial Grammar School(MMGS) in 1961, with the MMGS campus becoming Malvern Campus.

Caulfield Grammar has three-day campuses in Victoria,Caulfield(Years 7–12),Wheelers Hill(Kindergarten–Year 12), andMalvern House(Kindergarten–Year 6). It has an outdoor education campus atYarra Junction,and a student centre inNanjing,China where the Year 9 internationalism programme is conducted. Caulfield Grammar is the only Melbourne-based APS school to provideboardingfor both boys and girls, with 95 boarding students, and is the second largest school in Victoria, currently catering for 3,315 students. Mary Carpenter(3 April 1807 – 14 June 1877) was an English educational andsocial reformer.The daughter of aUnitarianminister,she founded aragged schoolandreformatories,bringing previously unavailable educational opportunities to poor children and young offenders inBristol.

She published articles and books on her work and her lobbying was instrumental in the passage of several educational acts in the mid-nineteenth century. She was the first woman to have a paper published by theStatistical Society of London.She addressed many conferences and meetings and became known as one of the foremost public speakers of her time. Carpenter was active in theanti-slavery movement;she also visited India, visiting schools and prisons and working to improvefemale education,establish reformatory schools and improve prison conditions.
