Portrait of the Duke of Cumberlandis an 1828portrait paintingby the English artistGeorge DawedepictingErnest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland.[1][2]The younger brother of the British monarchsGeorge IVandWilliam IV,he becameKing of Hanoverin 1837.
The fifth son ofGeorge III,Cumberland spent much of his youth in military service during theNapoleonic Warsand was present at theLiberation of Hanoverin 1813. He should not be confused with his great uncleWilliam, Duke of Cumberlandknown for his defeat of the1745 Jacobite risingwho was also depicted in numerous works of art. When his nieceQueen Victoriasucceeded to the British crown in 1837, Cumberland inherited theHanoverian throneas theGuelphic traditionofSalic Lawacknowledged him as the nearest male claimant.[3]
Dawe was a fashionable Britishportrait painterwho had spent a number of years inSaint Petersburgpainting leading figures of theRussian Empire.[4]He returned to England and died in 1829. His style has been compared toSir Thomas Lawrence,the leading British portraitist andPresident of the Royal Academy.Dawe shows Cumberland in the uniform of ageneralofhussarsand wearing multiple orders and decorations including theOrder of the Garter,Order of the Bathand thePrussian Red Eagle.[5]
Today the painting is in the collection of theNational Portrait GalleryinLondonhaving been acquired in 1946.[6]
