History

ThePrincipality of Serbiabegan to issue its own stamps in 1866.[1]Serbia was elevated to the status of aKingdomin 1881.

World War I

During the First World War, the territory of Serbia was under Austro-Hungarian occupation. Stamps of Bosnia and Herzegovina overprinted "Serbien" were issued for Serbia.

Kingdom of Yugoslavia

In 1920, its postal system was merged with the postal system of the formerAustro-Hungarianterritories with which it formed theKingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes,later theKingdom of Yugoslavia.

World War II

After theGermansestablished theGovernment of National Salvationin 1941, it issued its own stamps until 1944. Initially, Yugoslavian stamps were simply overprinted inGermanwith the wordSerbien.Later regular issues were inscribed bothSerbienandСрбија(Serbia).[2]

Post war

From 1944 onwards, Serbia was again part ofYugoslavia.

Modern Serbia

Upon the dissolution of the union ofSerbia and Montenegroin 2006, Serbia began issuing its own stamps once more. ThePost of Serbiaissues the country's stamps.
