Raphaël Adelino José GuerreiroComM(European Portuguese:[ʁɐfɐˈɛlɡɨˈʁɐjɾu];[2]born 22 December 1993) is a professionalfootballerwho plays as aleft-backormidfielderforBundesligaclubBayern Munichand thePortugal national team.
He began his career atCaen,signing in 2013 withLorientwhere he made hisLigue 1debut. In June 2016, he joinedBorussia Dortmund,going on to win twoDFB-Pokaland the2019 DFL-Supercupwhile totalling 224 games and 40 goals.[3]He moved to Bayern Munich in 2023 on a free transfer.
Born in France, Guerreiro represented Portugal atunder-21andsenior level,first appearing for the latter in 2014. He was part of their squad at twoWorld Cupsand twoEuropean Championships,winningEuro 2016.
Club career

[edit]Born inLe Blanc-Mesnil,Seine-Saint-Denisto a Portuguese father and a French mother, Guerreiro played youth football for three clubs, finishing his development atCaenafter signing in 2009 at the age of 15.[4]After starting as a senior with thereserve team,he made his professional debut in the2012–13 season,appearing in all the games and failing to start only once in an eventual fourth-place finish inLigue 2;he was also elected to theTeam of the Year.[5]
Lorient
[edit]On 27 June 2013, Guerreiro moved toLigue 1after signing a four-year contract withLorient.[6]His maiden appearance in the competition took place on 10 August, as he featured the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 away loss againstLille.[7]
On 1 November 2014, Guerreiro scored his first goal for Lorient, opening the scoring at title-holdersParis Saint-Germainin an eventual 2–1 defeat.[8]He finishedthe campaignwith seven goals to help his team stave off relegation,[9]including the equaliser as they came from behind to defeat his former employers 2–1 at theStade du Moustoir.[10]
Guerreiro opened the scoring in aDerby Bretonon 24 October 2015,assistedbyMajeed Warisin a 1–1 home draw againstRennes.[11]
Borussia Dortmund
[edit]On 16 June 2016,Borussia Dortmundsigned Guerreiro on a four-year contract[12]for a reported fee of €12 million (£9.5 million).[13]Under coachThomas Tuchel,he was primarily deployed as amidfielder.[14]
Guerreiro scored his first goal in theUEFA Champions Leagueon 14 September 2016, in a 6–0 away win againstLegia Warsawin thegroup phase.[15]In the2018–19 edition of the competition,and also at that stage, he added braces in victories overAtlético Madrid(4–0, home)[16]andMonaco(2–0).[17]
On 27 May 2023, in the last matchday, Guerreiro scored his fourth goal ofthe season– he also totalled 12 assists[18]– to help the hosts to come back from a 2–0 deficit againstMainz 05and draw 2–2, butDer KlassikerrivalsBayern Munichdefeated1. FC Köln2–1 away and were crownedBundesligachampions instead.[19]The following day, Dortmund announced the departure of five players, including Guerreiro.[20]
Bayern Munich
[edit]On 23 June 2023, Bayern Munich announced that they had secured Guerreiro as afree agent;[21]he agreed to a three-year deal.[22][23]He made his debut for the club on 26 September,coming off the benchin a 4–0 away win overPreußen Münsterin thefirst roundof theDFB-Pokal.[24]He scored his first goal on 11 November, taking the field at the hour mark and netting the Bavarians' third in a 4–2 league home victory against1. FC Heidenheim.[25]
International career
[edit]Guerreiro accepted the call to represent thePortugal under-21 teamafter being spotted byRui Jorge's coaching staff, making his debut on 21 March 2013 in a 0–1 home defeat againstSweden.[26]On 7 November 2014, even though he hardly spokethe language,[27]he was called up byFernando Santosto thefull side,for aUEFA Euro 2016qualifieragainstArmeniaand afriendlywithArgentina.[28]He made his debut on 14 November against the former opponent, playing the entire 1–0 win inFaro.[29]Four days later, against Argentina, he scored in thelast minutefor the only goal atOld Trafford.[30]
Guerreiro returned to the under-21s for the2015 UEFA European Championshipin the Czech Republic, helping them finish in second place.[31]He was one of five Portuguese included in the Team of the Tournament.[32]
Guerreiro was selected by the main squad for theirUEFA Euro 2016campaign,[33]playing the full 90 minutes in the first game, a 1–1 draw withIcelandinSaint-Étienne.[34]Portugal went on to win the competition, defeating hostsFrance1–0 in thefinalinextra time;[35]following his performances throughout the competition, he was nominated for theYoung Player of the TournamentAward, which ultimately went to his teammateRenato Sanches.[36]
In spite of an injury-riddledseason,[37]Guerreiro was picked for the2018 FIFA World Cup.[38]He started four matches in Russia, in a round-of-16 exit.[39]
Guerreiro also made the squad forUEFA Euro 2020.[40]He opened the 3–0 victory overHungaryin the first group fixture,[41]but scored anown goalthe following one in a 4–2 loss toGermany.[42]
In November 2022, Guerreiro was named in the final squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup.[43]On 6 December, he scored his team's fourth in an eventual 6–1 rout ofSwitzerlandinLusailin the round of 16.[44]
Guerreiro sustained an ankle injury in May 2024 which kept him out ofEuro 2024.[45]
Personal life
[edit]In 2014, Guerreiro said that he supportedBenfica,dreamed of playing forReal Madrid,and that his favourite player wasCristiano Ronaldo.His Portugal under-21 manager, Rui Jorge, remembered him as a very introverted character, in part due to his language difficulties.[27]
Guerreiro and his family used to watch matches of the Portugal national team, of whichPauletawas a footballer he admired.[46]
