Rathin Datta(1931 – 27 January 2020) was an Indian physician fromTripura.He was a recipient ofPadma ShriandFriends of Liberation War Honour.

Biography

Datta was born in 1931 atMangaldoiinAssam.[1][2]He completed his schooling atShillong.[3]Later, he completed graduation fromAssam Medical CollegeinDibrugarh.[1]He interned underBidhan Chandra Roy.[3]Then, he went toLondonforFellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.[1]

After returning toIndiaDatta joined Tripura Health Services in the late sixties.[3]During theLiberation War of Bangladeshhe gave treatment to the freedom fighters ofBangladeshand Indian soldiers. He saved many lives in 1971.[4]He retired from service as the director and special secretary of the Tripura Health Services in 1992.[1]

Datta was conferredPadma Shriin 1992 for his contribution in medicine.[5]He was the second person fromTripurawho received Padma Shri.[6]He receivedFriends of Liberation War Honourin 2012 for his contribution to theLiberation War of Bangladesh.[7]

Datta died on 27 January 2020 at his own home inKolkataat the age of 88.[2][8]
