Ravenalais agenusofmonocotyledonousflowering plants. Classically, the genus was considered to include a single species,Ravenala madagascariensisfrom Madagascar.

Taxonomy

Species of the genusRavenalaare not true palms (familyArecaceae) but members of the familyStrelitziaceae.The genus is closely related to the southern African genusStrelitziaand the South American genusPhenakospermum.Some older classifications include these genera in the banana family (Musaceae).

Etymology

The scientific nameRavenalacomes fromMalagasyravinalaorravina alameaning "forest leaves".[1][2]

Species

Although formerly considered to bemonotypic,four different forms have been distinguished.[3][4]Five new species were described in 2021, all from Madagascar.[5]The following species are currently recognised in the genusRavenala:[6]
