Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak(Arabic:رزان خليفة المبارك;born 1979) is the managing director of theEnvironment Agency Abu Dhabi(EAD),[1]and theMohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fundas well as the current president of theInternational Union for Conservation of Nature.[2]

Early life[edit]

Al Mubarak was born in 1979 inAbu Dhabi.[3]She is the daughter of Khalifa Ahmed Abdulaziz Al-Mubarak,[4]a formerUAEambassador to France who was assassinated in 1984 in Paris by theAbu Nidal Organizationterrorist group,[5]and Sameera Al Khamis. Al Mubarak's grandfather was Ahmed Abdulaziz Hamad Al-Mubarak, former judge and chairperson of the Shari'a Judicial Department in theEmirate of Abu Dhabi.[6]Al Mubarak has three siblings: Rasha;Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak,Managing Director ofMubadala Investment Company;and Mohamed Khalifa Al-Mubarak, Chairman ofAbu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority.

Al Mubarak holds an M.Sc. in Public Understanding of Environmental Change from theUniversity College Londonand a BA in Environmental Studies and International Relations fromTufts University.[7][8]

Career[edit]

In 2001, Al Mubarak helped establish Emirates Nature–WWF (EN–WWF)—a UAE affiliate of the WWF.[9]She is its Managing Director.[9]In 2008, she became the founding Managing Director of theMohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund(MBZ Fund).[3]

She is the managing director of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD).[1][10]Appointed in 2011,[9]she was the first woman[11]to serve as secretary general and was promoted to its board of directors in 2018 by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi,Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.[12]Under Al Mubarak, the EAD played a key role to reintroduce thescimitar-horned oryxinto the wild inChad.[13]

She is on the board of theFederal Authority for Nuclear Regulationand theInternational Center for Biosaline Agriculture.[14][15]In addition, she serves as an Advisory Board member of theRockefeller Foundation Economic Council on Planetary Health,[16]the Cambridge Conservation Initiative,[17]the Emirates Diplomatic Academy,[18]a board member ofPanthera,[19][7]and Board Member to theAbu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation(ADMAF).[20]

In September 2021, she was elected as the president ofInternational Union for Conservation of Naturefor a 4-year term, becoming the second woman to be elected to lead the organization in the organization's history.[21]In 2013, the Abu Dhabi American Chamber of Commerce awarded Al Mubarak the "Women in Business".[22][23]In 2018, theWorld Economic Forumappointed her as aYoung Global Leaderof the Forum.[24][25]

Al Mubarak together with the advisory board of the MBZ Fund published an article in the journalCurrent Biologyabout the importance and benefits of species, which argued that species cannot be evaluated based on their economic value alone and should be understood for their cultural and inherent value as living organisms.[26]

Personal life[edit]

Al Mubarak is married toBadr Jafar,an Emirati businessperson.[27]They are signatories toBillandMelinda Gates' andWarren Buffett's "The Giving Pledge".[27]They have publicly committed more than half of their wealth to philanthropy.[27][28]
