GibraltarBritish Overseas Territorylocated near the southernmost tip of theIberian Peninsulaof SoutheasternEuropeoverlooking theStrait of Gibraltarbetween theMediterranean Seaand theNorth Atlantic Ocean.[1]The territory shares a border withSpainto the north. Gibraltar was ceded by Spain toGreat Britainin perpetuity in 1713 under theTreaty of Utrechtthough Spain requests its return. TheGovernment of the United Kingdomhas stated it is committed to respecting the wishes of theGibraltarians,[2]who strongly oppose the idea of annexation along with any proposal for shared sovereignty with Spain.[3][4]
