Rita Payés Roma(born 1999)[1]is a SpanishjazzandBoss a novatrombonist, singer and songwriter.[2]

Early life

Payés was born inVilassar de Marto a musical family with her mother, Elisabeth Roma, a classical guitarist and her father and brother trumpeters.[3]She graduated in jazz trombone at theEscola Superior de Música de Catalunya.[4]

Career

At the age of thirteen Payés joined theSant Andreu Jazz Band,directed byJoan Chamorrowhere she began singing alongsideAndrea Motis,Magalí Datzira, Alba Armengou and Eva Fernandez.[5]At fifteen, she released her first album.[6]

In September 2017, Payés, joined by theMotis Chamorro Quintet,played at the 17thTanjazzfestival inTangier,Morocco.[7][8]

In 2019, Payés releasedImagina,in collaboration with her mother.[5]The two went on tour to promote the album in Europe.[9][10]In alliance with Italian pianistMassimo Faraò[de],Payés in 2019 recorded two albums in New York:My IdealstarringScott Hamilton,andIn New York.[11][12]

On 16 April 2021, Payés released her albumComo la pielin another cooperation with her mother, Roma, her partner, Pol Batlle, and with her brothers Eudald and Pere.[13]The album madeNPR Music'sbest Latin album in 2021.[14]The trackNunca vas a comprender,an original composition, was an NPR Music's staff pick who described her voice as "angelic".[15]Two months later, she was given the 2021 Alícia prize for emerging talent, awarded by the Acadèmia Catalana de la Música.[16]

In June 2021, Payes and Roma presented their repertoire atJazzBalticainTimmendorfer Strand,Germany, in a concert which impressed critic Angela Ballhorn through their simple and touching play.[17]During that summer, they also had a concert at the "INNtöne Jazzfestival" in theInnviertel,Austria, which was later aired by the Austrian radio stationÖ1.[18]

In July 2022, Payés and her band played at JazzclubTrier.The newspaperVolksfreund,titling "Heartache can be so fine", called her voice "phantastic", between ingratiation, aggression and infinite sadness.[19]In August, Payés metWDR Big Bandfor two concerts titledThe Spanish TromboneinCologne.[20][21]AtColorsxStudiosin Berlin, Germany, Payés and Batlle recorded their new single "Vida" within the scope ofA Colors Show.[22]In November, 2022, Payés performed with her group in Studio Foce,Lugano,Switzerland,[23]and had a concert at the 22nd festivalRigas RitmiinRiga,Latvia,[24]before which they played at the concert hallAncienne BelgiqueinBrussels,Belgium. In his concert report, Didier Deroissart described their repertoire as a mix of jazz,Boss a novaandlounge musicwith someAmericana.[25]

At the36th Goya Awardsceremony in Valencia 2022, Payés performedTe venerowithC. Tanganain a live TV broadcast byRadiotelevisión Española.About her performance Madrid'sEl Independientewrote that her deep voice outshone "the famous presence of C. Tangana".[6][26]

In December 2021, Payés announced that she had given birth to a girl.[27]
