Rita Ryackis acostume designerwho was nominated for anAcademy AwardforBest Costume Designat the73rd Academy Awardsfor her work inHow the Grinch Stole Christmas.[1]She was also nominated for aTony Awardat the37th Tony AwardsforMy One and Only,[2]and was nominated for the award again in 2014, forCasa Valentina.[3]She received a further nomination at the62nd Primetime Emmy Awardsfor the filmYou Don't Know Jack.
Career
[edit]Rita Ryack was born inBoston,Massachusetts. She received her BFA fromBrandeis UniversityinWaltham, Massachusettsand later her MFA fromYale School of Drama.She began her work in the entertainment induesty as a cartoon animator for Lisberger Studios in Boston.
Her first design job for theBroadwaymusicalMy One and Only,for which she earned her first Tony nomination.[4]Throughout the years she has done costume design for a wide range of productions such as films likeHairspray,Casino,andApollo 13,many on and off Broadway theater productions, as well as the music video forBad by Michael Jackson.
Notably she has, many times, worked withMartin Scorsese,Ron Howard,andRobert De Niro.
While designing for productions such as the Broadway playCasa Valentinashe references old advertisements, photographs, and films for inspiration.[5]
