Rosa Salazar(/ˈsæləzɑːr/;born July 16, 1985) is an American actress. She had roles in theNBCseriesParenthood(2011–2012) and theFXanthology seriesAmerican Horror Story: Murder House(2011). She made her breakthrough as the title character of the filmAlita: Battle Angel(2019) and is known for starring in the seriesBrand New Cherry Flavor(2021), which she also co-produced.
Salazar appeared inThe Divergent Series: Insurgent(2015),Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials(2015), andMaze Runner: The Death Cure(2018) and also appeared in theNetflixfilmsThe Kindergarten Teacher(2018) andBird Box(2018). She stars in theAmazonseriesUndone(2019–2022).
Early life
[edit]Salazar was born on July 16, 1985 inWashington, D.C.[1]to Luis and Marilynne Salazar.[2][3]Her father isPeruvianand her mother isFrench-Canadian.[4]She grew up in Washington, D.C. and nearbyGreenbelt, Maryland.[5]She attended Greenbelt Middle School andEleanor Roosevelt High Schoolin Greenbelt,[6]where she was active in the theatre program.[7]She attendedPrince George's Community College,where she studied drama, then continued drama studies atUpright Citizens Brigade,where she practiced method acting, improvisation and performance.
Career
[edit]Salazar enjoyed entertaining others from the age of fifteen and became serious about becoming an actress after moving toNew York Cityas a young adult. There she appeared in severalCollegeHumorsketches. Shortly after relocating toLos Angelesin 2009, she made her film debut playing the character Crystal inJamesy Boy,written and directed byTrevor White.She then landed recurring roles on two hit TV series:American Horror Story: Murder HouseandParenthood.[8]In 2015, she co-starred in various sequels:The Divergent Series: InsurgentasLynn,[9]andMaze Runner: The Scorch Trialsas Brenda.[10]
In 2016, Salazar directed and starred in the short filmGood Crazy,[11]a story of a social crusader. It was nominated for a Short Film Grand Jury prize at theSundance Film Festival.
In 2018, she reprised her role as Brenda inMaze Runner: The Death Cure.
In 2019, she made hermajor studiolead debut with the filmAlita: Battle Angel,an adaptation of themangaGunnmdirected byRobert Rodriguez.[5]It brought Salazar numerous awards, including "Best Visual Effects or Animated Performance" from theHollywood Critics Associationand "Best Voice or Motion Capture Performance" from theAssociation of Latin Entertainment Critics.[12]That year, it was announced that Salazar would have a main role on theNetflixhorror drama miniseriesBrand New Cherry Flavor.[13]It was released on August 13, 2021.[14]
In 2023, Salazar was invited to become a member of theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[15]
