Rubus odoratus,thepurple-flowered raspberry,[2][3]flowering raspberry,[3]orVirginia raspberry,is a species ofRubus, native to eastern North America, fromNova Scotiawest toOntarioandWisconsin, and south along theAppalachian Mountainsas far asGeorgiaandAlabama.[3][4]

Rubus odoratusis ashrubgrowing to 3 metres (10 ft) tall, withperennial, notbiennial, stems (unlike many other species in the genus). Also, unlike most other related species this plant does not have thorns. Theleavesare palmately lobed with five (rarely three or seven) lobes, up to 25 cm (10 in) long and broad, superficially resembling maple leaves. Theflowersare 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) in diameter, with five magenta or occasionally whitepetals;they are produced from early spring to early fall. The red ediblefruitmatures in late summer to early autumn, and resembles a large, flat raspberry with manydrupelets, and is rather fuzzy to the touch and tongue.[2][5][6][7][8]

This species is occasionally referred to asthimbleberry,[9][10][11]a name more commonly associated with fellow North American speciesRubus parviflorus.
