Rupavati(pronounced rūpavati, meaningthe beautiful one) is arāgaminCarnatic music(musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 12thmelakartarāgam (parent scale) in the 72melakartarāgam system of Carnatic music. It is one of the few rāgams given the same name by theMuthuswami Dikshitarschool of Carnatic music.[1]

It is the 6th rāgam in the 2ndchakra Netra.The mnemonic name isNetra-Sha.The mnemonic phrase issa ra gi ma pa dhu nu.[2]Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇastructure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (seeswarasin Carnatic musicfor details on below notation and terms):

The notes used in this scale areshuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, shatsruthi dhaivathamandkakali nishadham.As it is amelakartarāgam, by definition it is asampurnarāgam(has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale). It is theshuddha madhyamamequivalent ofDivyamani,which is the 48thmelakartascale.

Asampurna Melakarta[edit]

Rupavatiis also the original name given to the 12thMelakartain the list compiled byVenkatamakhin.The notes used in the scale are the same, but the scales aresvarantara-shadavaraga (4 notes in ascending scale and 6 are used in descending scale).[1]
