Rusazus[1]was aPhoenician,Carthaginian,andRomantown located nearCape Corbelin,Algeria.Its ruins are near the town ofAzeffoun.[1]
Name[edit]
RŠZ(Phoenician:𐤓𐤔𐤆) was the Phoenician andPunicname ofCape Corbelinand meant "Capeof the Strong One "[2]or "Cape of theFort".[1]It washellenizedasRhousazoûs(Greek:Ῥουσαζοῦς)[3]andLatinizedvariously as Rusazus,[4]Rusazu,[5]Rusazis,[6]Ruseius,[7]andRusadum.[8]
As to which "Strong One" might have been meant,Lipińskioffers thatAzeffoun's name itself might be aBerbermemory of a Punic toponym honoringBaal Zephon,[2]who was reckoned a patron of maritime trade. He allows, though, that pending the discovery of such an inscription, mere assonance is also possible.[2]
History[edit]
Rusazus was established as acolonyalong the trade route between theStrait of GibraltarandPhoenicia.It consisted of a small fortress south of Cape Corbelin.[1]It eventually fell underCarthaginiancontrol, probably during the 6th centuryBC.
Under the Romans, it was established as aRoman colonyunderAugustus.[4]It was part ofMauretania Caesariensisafter AD44.
Inlate antiquity,it was part of theVandal Kingdomprior to theByzantinereconquest of Africa.Itwas overrunby theUmayyad Caliphatein the 7th century.
Ruins[edit]
The site includes anecropolisand the ruins ofbaths,temples,and Roman-era embankments.
Religion[edit]
The Roman town had aChristianbishopric(Latin:Dioecesis Rusaditana).[9][8]It was revived in the 20th century as aRoman Catholictitular see.
