Malmöwas a 981 GRTcoasterthat was built in 1918 by H C Stülcken Sohn,Hamburg,Germany for German owners. Although she sank after hitting aminein 1942, she was salvaged and repaired and then returned to service. She was seized by theAlliesin May 1945, passed to the BritishMinistry of War Transport(MoWT) and was renamedEmpire Contay.In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamedReykjanes.She served until 1953 when she wasscrapped.

Description

Malmöwas built in 1918 by H C Stülcken Sohn atHamburg.[1]She was 217 feet 1 inch (66.17 m) long, with abeamof 32 feet 4 inches (9.86 m) and a depth of 12 feet 7 inches (3.84 m). The ship measured 981gross register tons(GRT) and a 468net register tons(NRT).[1]It was powered by atriple expansion steam engine,which had cylinders of17+716inches (44.3 cm),29+12inches (75 cm) and46+12inches (118 cm) diameter by31+12inches (80 cm) stroke. The engine was built by H C Stülcken Sohn.[1]

Malmöwas built for Bissmark LinieGmbHof Hamburg.[2]Herport of registrywas Hamburg and she was allocated thecode lettersRWGC.[1]In 1934, her code Letters were changed to DHQC.[3]On 1 June 1942,Malmöstruck anaval mineand sank south west ofMalmö,Sweden. She was salvaged, repaired and returned to service. In May 1945,Malmöwas seized by theAlliesatSchlei.She was passed to the British MoWT and renamedEmpire Contay.[2]She was placed under the management of E T Atkinson & Sons Ltd,Hull.[4]

In 1947,Empire Contaywas sold to Oddsson & Co Ltd, Hull and was renamedReykjanes.She was sold in 1949 to Endeavour Shipping Co Ltd, serving until 1953 when she was scrapped inRosyth,Dunbartonshire.[2]
