Saïis a large island in theNile RiverinNubiabetween the second and thirdcataracts,in the country ofSudan.It is 12 km long and 5.5 km wide. Saï was intermittently occupied by theEgyptiansduring theNew Kingdom.In theMakurianperiod it was the center of a bishopric, while in the second half of the 16th century theOttomansfounded a fortress on the island.

The northeast portion of the island contains aNew Kingdom of Egypttemple and numerousmillsassociated with ancient gold production. Nearby is anOttoman Empirefort composed of sandstone quarried along the river banks, andspoliabearing thecartoucheofAmenhotep IV,amongst other18th Dynastyrulers. Numerous round tombs are close by.[1]
