Salanoiais a genus ofeupleridcarnivoranwith two currently described species found inMadagascar.[1]They aremongoose-like, which is reflected in the older versions of their English names, for examplebrown-tailed mongoosewhich is now called brown-tailed vontsira.[2]The nameSalanoiais derived fromsalano,one of the vernacular names forSalanoia concolor.[2]

Vontsirais a Malagasy vernacular name that seems to apply to a few local species of local mongoose-like carnivores in the related generaSalanoia,Galidia,andGalidictis.[2]
