TheHouse of Sanguszko[a]is a Polish and Lithuanian noble and aristocratic family ofLithuanianandRuthenianorigin, connected to theGediminid dynasty.Like otherprincelyhouses ofPolish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, its origins are considered murky. Present historical opinion holds in favour of their descent fromAlgirdas' grandson Alexander (fl.1433–1443), lord ofKovelandLiuboml, whose name can be shortened toSangush. The family supposedly descends from two lines, associated with two of his sons, Alexander and Michael.

The senior line, called theSanguszko-Koszyrski,has been extinct since the death ofAdam Aleksander Sanguszkoin 1653. The junior line, or theSanguszko-Kowelski,ofSzymon Samuel Sanguszko, subsequently assumed the titleSanguszko-Lubartowicz,according to the erroneous assumption of their descent from Algirdas' younger brotherLiubartas.

PrincePaweł Karol Sanguszko-Lubartowicz(1682–1752), a Court andGrand Marshal of Lithuania, greatly expanded his holdings through his second marriage withMarianna Lubomirska, heiress ofOstroh. His chief residence atIziaslav(now inUkraine) was embellished with a famous collection ofPersian carpets, known as Sanguszko carpets. Hieronymous Sanguszko (1743–1812) founded the Volhynia stud, establishing the family as breeders ofArabian horses.

After thepartitions of Poland,Eustachy Erazm Sanguszkofought in theKościuszko UprisingandNapoleon'sRussian campaign. His son, PrinceRoman Sanguszko, was a Polish officer who participated in theNovember Uprising, and was exiled toSiberia. His life is the subject of "Prince Roman" (1910) one ofJoseph Conrad's short stories. With the incorporation ofGaliciaintoSoviet UkraineafterWorld War II,the Sanguszkos lost their Gumniska andSławutaestates, as well as their palace inLviv, and emigrated toBrazil.

By the late 20th century, the family was represented by a single descendant, Prince Paul (born 1973), who resides inSão Paulo. His mother came from thePolignaclineage. In 2010 Olympia Sanguszko was born to Prince Paul and his wife.
