Sean Michael Ramaley(born May 13, 1975) was aDemocraticmember of thePennsylvania House of Representativesfor the16th Districtfrom 2004 to 2008.[2]
Personal life
[edit]Sean Ramaley was born inEconomy, Pennsylvania,and attendedQuigley Catholic High School,where in sports and other activities, including baseball, basketball, soccer, bowling and scouting.[3]His father was a mechanic forUS Airwaysfor 38 years.[3]
Ramaley graduated fromAllegheny Collegein 1997 and was awarded the college's "Ethical Leader of the Year Award."[3]He moved to Ohio and served as a Research and Policy Aide for theOhio Legislative Service Commission,focusing on state finance and budgetary matters.[3]Ramaley returned to Pennsylvania as a professional political operative,managingpolitical campaigns forU.S. Congress,thePennsylvania House of Representatives,Allegheny County Council,Pennsylvania Courts of Common Pleas, and several municipal offices.
He attended theUniversity of Pittsburgh School of Law,joining theUniversity of Pittsburgh Law Review.[3]After graduating in 2002, he took a position with theUnited States Department of Labor,where he clerked for the department'sAdministrative Law Judges.[3]While at the Department of Labor, he joined theAmerican Federation of Government Employees,Local 644.[3]He also has maintained aprivate legal practice,working on corporate transactions, wills and estates.[3]
He volunteered for theAmerican Legion’s Boys State Programand co-founded the non-profitKeystone Leadership Development Corporation.[3]He is on thePenn State Beaver Advisory Board[4]and theAllegheny College Alumni Council.[5]
Political career
[edit]Career as State Representative
[edit]Ramaley won a 5-way race for the Democratic nomination forPennsylvania's 16th legislative district,an open seat upon the retirement ofSusan Laughlin.[6]In July 2004, he took a job as a legislative staffer for the powerfulBeaver Countystate representative,Mike Veon.[7]He was elected to thePennsylvania House of Representativesthe November with a comfortable 20-point margin.[8]He worked for Representative Veon until December of that year.[7]
He was re-elected without opposition in2006.[9]
2008 race for State Senate
[edit]Ramaley won the Democratic primary to succeed the retiringGerald LaVallein the47th senatorial district.[10]
Indictment and acquittal
[edit]In July 2008, Ramaley was one of 12 individuals indicted byPennsylvania Attorney GeneralTom Corbettas part of the2006 Pennsylvania General Assembly bonus controversy.Ramaley was not indicted for accepting or authorizing bonuses, but on charges of taking a part-time "no-work" job in theBeaver Fallsdistrict office of state RepresentativeMike Veon,while running for office.[11][12]After pressure from party leaders, Ramaley withdrew from the race, although he and his lawyer alleged that the charges were politically motivated.[11]
At a jury trial, Ramaley presented evidence from former co-workers who testified that Ramaley did in fact perform work in the position. Ramaley was acquitted by a jury of all six charges against him on December 10, 2009.[12]
