Sean M. Ryanis an American attorney and politician serving as a member of theNew York State Senatefrom the61st District.ADemocrat,he previously served as a member of theNew York State Assemblyfrom 2011 to 2021, and the 60th District from 2021 to 2022.
Education[edit]
Ryan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from theState University of New York at Fredoniaand aJuris DoctorfromBrooklyn Law School.He was then admitted theNew York State Bar Association.
Career[edit]
As an attorney, Ryan has specialized in anti-discrimination and labor law cases.[1]On September 13, 2011, Ryan was elected during aspecial electionto the New York State Assembly, succeeding longtime assemblymanSam Hoyt.[2]
In 2012, he was elected to the 149th district. He was supported by the1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.[3]
In2020,he was elected toNew York's 60th senate district.Due toredistrictingfollowing the2020 U.S. census,Ryan successfully ran in the newly-drawn61st senate districtin the2022 election.As a member of the State Senate, Ryan championed legislation to prohibitnon-compete clausesin New York, which passed both houses of the state legislature in 2023.[4]
