TheSexenio DemocráticoorSexenio Revolucionario( "six democratic/revolutionary years" ) is a period of six years between 1868 and 1874 in thehistory of Spain.
TheSexenio Democráticostarts on 30 September 1868 with the overthrow of QueenIsabella II of Spainafter theGlorious Revolution,and ends on 29 December 1874 with theBourbon Restoration,when Isabella's sonAlfonso XIIbecame King after a coup d'état byArsenio Martínez-Campos.
The sexenio spawned the most progressive 19th-century Spanish constitution, the1869 Constitution,the one dedicating the most space to the rights of the Spanish citizens.[1]
Three phases can be distinguished inSexenio Democrático:
- TheProvisional Government (1868–1871)of theKingdom of Spain(September 1868 – January 1871)
- The rule of KingAmadeo I of Spainover the Kingdom of Spain (January 1871 – February 1873)
- TheFirst Spanish Republic(February 1873 – December 1874)
TheSexenio Democráticowas a politically very unstable period.
