Sharvari Wagh(born 14 June 1997),[1]known mononymously asSharvari,is an Indian actress who works inHindifilms. She began her career as an assistant director forLuv RanjanandSanjay Leela Bhansaliin 2015, before making her acting debut withKabir Khan's war drama seriesThe Forgotten Army - Azaadi Ke Liye(2020).
Sharvari ventured into films withYash Raj Films's comedyBunty Aur Babli 2(2021), which won her theFilmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[2]She had her first commercial success with the comedy horror filmMunjya(2024), which emerged as her breakout role.[3]
Early life
She was born in aMarathifamily in 1997. Her parents are Shailesh Wagh, a builder and Namrata Wagh, an architect. She studied atMumbai's The Dadar Parsee Youths Assembly High School andRuparel College.[2]Manohar Joshi,former chief minister ofMaharashtra,was her maternal grandfather.[4]
Career
Sharvari worked as an assistant director in the moviesPyaarKaPunchnama 2,BajiraoMastaniandSonuKeTitu KiSweety.[4]She said she had been auditioning since 2014 for a main role in movies.[5]She made her acting debut with the 2020Amazon PrimeseriesThe Forgotten Army - Azaadi Ke LiyeoppositeSunny Kaushal.[6]
Sharvari made her film debut alongsideRani Mukerji,Saif Ali KhanandSiddhant ChaturvediinYash Raj Films(YRF)'s crime comedyBunty Aur Babli 2,which was released in 2021.[7]Her performance earned her theFilmfare Award for Best Female DebutandIIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female.Hindustan Timesnoted, "Sharvari is pretty confident for her first film and has a great screen presence."[8]It did not perform well at the box-office.[9]
Her next release was three years later, in the comedy horror filmMunjyain 2024. Inspired by theMaharashtrianfolktale ofmunjya,the film served as an instalment of theMaddock Supernatural Universe.[10]Sukanya VermafromRediffopined, "Sharvari sticks to her brief -- beam in enthusiasm, scowl in prosthetics".[11]Commercially, the film emerged as asleeper hitand proved to be her breakout role.[3][12]Sharvari had a brief role (billed as a special appearance) opposite debutante Junaid Khan in YRF's period dramaMaharaj,a delayed production that was released onNetflix.[13]In her third release of the year, Sharvari played the title role of aDalitwoman in the action dramaVedaa,co-starringJohn Abraham.[14]In a mixed review of the film, Nandini Ramnath ofScroll.intook note of how well she "channel[led] her heroine’s fighting spirit".[15]
Sharvari will next join theYRF Spy UniverseinAlpha,a spy thriller film led byAlia Bhatt.[16]
