Sheikh Jamal(28 April 1954 – 15 August 1975) was the second son ofSheikh Fazilatunnesa MujibandSheikh Mujibur Rahman,[1][2]the firstpresident of Bangladesh.[3]
Early life
[edit]Jamal was born atTungipara,Gopalganjon 28 April 1954. He wasMujib's third child out of five.[4]He was afreedom fighter.His sister,Sheikh Hasina,is the currentPrime Minister of Bangladesh.[5]
Jamal, after a period of studies atBAF Shaheen College Dhaka,finished hismatriculationfromDhaka Residential Model CollegeinDhaka.[6]He passed hisHSCfromDhaka College.He learned playingguitarat a music institution and was also a goodcricketer.
He was married to his paternal first cousin Parveen Jamal Rosy (1956-1975) on July 17, 1975. Jamal’sfatherand Rosy’s mother were siblings.
Career
[edit]Detained with his mother and other members of the family at a house inDhanmondiduring thewar of Liberationin 1971, Jamal found the means to escape and cross over to a liberated zone, where he joined the struggle to free the country. While a student of Dhaka College, Jamal traveled toYugoslaviafor military training under the auspices of the Yugoslav army. Subsequently, he trained at theRoyal Military Academy SandhurstinGreat Britain.He joined theBangladesh Armyas a secondlieutenantin theEast Bengal Regiment.[3][7][8]
Death and legacy
[edit]Jamal and his wife Rosy were killed along with other members of his family (parents, brothers, uncle, sister-in-law) during theAssassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[9][10]The professional sports clubSheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club[11]and Sheikh Jamal Stadium inFaridpurtown are named after him.[12]
