Shunya Itō(Y đằng tuấn cũng,Itō Shun'ya,born February 17, 1937)is a Japanese film director known for starting theSasori/Female Prisoner Scorpionseries of 1970sexploitation filmsstarringMeiko Kaji.Itō worked forToei Companyfor most of his career. In 1972, he won aDirectors Guild of Japan New Directors Citationfor his first film,Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion.[1]

He wonPicture of the Yearat theJapanese Academy Awardsin 1985 with his filmGray Sunset,[2]a story of a man suffering fromAlzheimer's disease.This thus became Japan's entry for theAcademy Award for Best Foreign Language Filminstead ofAkira Kurosawa'sRan,which caused a slight uproar in Western media as many critics thoughtRanhad a real chance of winning whereasGray Sunsetwas not even shortlisted. In 1995, he directedLupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus.In 1998, he directed the World War II dramaPride: The Fateful Moment,presenting a sympathetic view ofHideki Tōjōon trial at theInternational Military Tribunal for the Far East,attracting accusations ofrevisionism.
