Siamon GordonFRSFMedSci(born 29 April 1938) is a Britishpathologist.[2]He isGlaxo WellcomeProfessor EmeritusofCellular Pathologyat theUniversity of Oxford.[3]

Education

He gained his medical degrees (M.B.andCh.B.) from theUniversity of Cape Town,South Africa.He earned hisPhDfromRockefeller University,where he taught from 1971 to 1976. The rest of his career, from 1976 to 2008, was at the University of Oxford.[4]

Career and research

He was on theFaculty of 1000.[5]He was a visiting scientist at theNIH.[6]He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of theAmerican Asthma Foundation.[7]

Gordon is noted for his work on the phenotypic and functional diversity ofmacrophages.He began his studies on macrophages while in the laboratory ofZanvil CohnatRockefeller Universityin 1966. Upon his move to theSir William Dunn School of PathologyatUniversity of Oxfordin 1976 he continued this work and identified the pan-macrophagemarkerF4/80.Subsequent studies led to the identification of various scavenger receptors and thecloningof thepattern recognition receptor,Dectin-1.
