TheSiegerlandis a region ofGermanycovering the old district ofSiegen(now part of the district ofSiegen-WittgensteininNorth Rhine-Westphalia) and the upper part of the district ofAltenkirchen,belonging to theRhineland-Palatinateadjoining it to the west.
Geologically, the Siegerland belongs to theRhenish Massif(Rheinisches Schiefergebirge,Rhenish Slate Mountains). The point of highest elevation is theRiemen,at 678 metres above sea level. The riverSieg,a right tributary of the riverRhine,has its source in the town ofNetphenin theRothaar Mountains.
The region around thecityofSiegenis centered in the middle ofGermany.It includes the municipalities ofHilchenbach,Netphen,Kreuztal,FreudenbergandSiegen,and the communities ofWilnsdorf,BurbachandNeunkirchen,all in North Rhine-Westphalia, and in the Rhineland-Palatinate the municipalities ofKirchen,HerdorfandBetzdorf,with the community ofDaaden.The population is approximately 300,000.[citation needed]
The region also has a dialectSiegerländischwhich is spoken by many of its inhabitants.[1]
