Sitka Soundis a body of water near the city ofSitka,Alaska.It is bordered byBaranof Islandto the south and the northeast, byKruzof Islandto the northwest and by thePacific Oceanto the southwest. During the early 19th century it was a major locus of themaritime fur trade.

Naming history

Sitka Sound was named Ensenada de Susto byJuan de la Bodegaon 15 August 1775. It was later named Norfolk Sound[1]byJames Cook.In 1801,Fleurieupublished a map naming it Baie Tchinkîtâné in an attempt to useTlingittoponyms.[2]
