Inmolecular biology,SNORD48(also known asU48) is anon-coding RNA(ncRNA) molecule which functions in the modification of othersmall nuclear RNAs(snRNAs). This type of modifying RNA is usually located in thenucleolusof the eukaryotic cell which is a major site of snRNA biogenesis. It is known as asmall nucleolar RNA(snoRNA) and also often referred to as a guide RNA.

U48 belongs to theC/D boxclass of snoRNAs which contain the conserved sequence motifs known as the C box (UGAUGA) and the D box (CUGA). Most of the members of the box C/D family function in directing site-specific 2'-O-methylationof substrate RNAs.[1]

This snoRNA was originally cloned fromHeLacells and experimentally verified bynorthern blotting.[2]SNORD48 is predicted to guide the 2'O-ribose methylation of 28S rRNA C2279.[3]In the human genome this snoRNA is located in theintronsof the same host gene (C6orf48) as another C/D boxsnoRNA U52(also known as SNORD52).[3]
