Asomma volcano,also known as asommian,is avolcaniccalderathat has been partially filled by a new centralcone.The type is named afterMount Somma( "Summit" ), astratovolcanoinsouthern Italywith a summit caldera in which the upper cone ofMount Vesuviushas grown. Other examples of somma volcanoes can be found on Russia'sKamchatka Peninsulaand theKuril Islands,stretching south from Kamchatka toHokkaidō,Japan.[citation needed]
