Souk Es Sekajine(Arabic:سوق السكاجين) orSouk Es Sarragineis one of thesouksof themedina of Tunis.specializing inleather goods,saddles,andhorse harnesses.[1]
Name
[edit]The termEs Sekajineis a mutation ofach-chakkazine,referring to traditional craftsmen who madeachkouz,saddles of high-quality leather.[1]
In some European books, it is instead called Souk des Selliers, meaning "souk ofsaddlers".[2][3]
Location
[edit]The souk is situated west ofAl-Zaytuna Mosqueand east ofBab Menaragate.[1][3]
History
[edit]The souk has existed since the 15th century CE. It was revived in the 18th century byAl-Husayn I ibn Aliof theHusainid Dynasty.[1]
In modern times, the souk has a variety of merchants and there are only two saddlemakers remaining there.[1]
Monuments
[edit]The souk has two monuments: aTomb of the Unknown Soldierand the tomb of theMajorcanwriterAnselm Turmeda.
