Astate legislatureis alegislative branchor body of apolitical subdivisionin afederalsystem.

Two federations literally use the term "state legislature":

• The legislative branches of each of the fiftystate governmentsof theUnited Statesare known asstate legislatures.Six territorial legislatures also exist.
• The legislative branches of the twenty-eightstate governmentsofIndiaare known asstate legislatures.In addition, threeunion territoriallegislatures also exists.

Other federations use other terms for the same concept:

• Australia;the legislative branches of the sixstatesare known asstate parliaments.In addition, two territorial parliaments also exist.
• Austria;the legislative branches of the ninestatesare known as theLandtag.
• Brazil;The legislative branches of thestatesare known aslegislative assemblies.
