Steve Chen(Chinese:Trần sĩ tuấn;Wade–Giles:Chen Shih-chün;born August 25, 1978)[2]is a Taiwanese-AmericanInternet entrepreneurwho is one of the co-founders and previouschief technology officerof the video-sharing websiteYouTube.After he co-founded the companyAVOS Systems,Inc. and built the video-sharing appMixBit,[3]he joinedGoogle Venturesin 2014.[4]
Early years and education
[edit]Chen was born inTaipei,Taiwan.When he was seven years old, he and his family immigrated to the United States[5]and settled inProspect Heights, Illinois.[6]He went toRiver Trails Middle SchoolinMount Prospectfor his middle school education andJohn Hersey High SchoolinArlington Heightsfor his freshman year of high school. For his final three years of high school, he attended theIllinois Mathematics and Science AcademyinAurora, Illinois.At theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,he studiedcomputer science.[7]
Business career
[edit]Chen was an employee atPayPal,where he first metChad HurleyandJawed Karim.Chen was also an early employee atFacebook,although he left after several months to start YouTube.[8]
In 2005, Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim and Steve Chen founded YouTube, with Chen having the position of chief technology officer. In June 2006, Chen was named byBusiness 2.0as one of "The 50 people who matter now" in business.[9]
On October 16, 2006, Chen and Hurley sold YouTube toGoogle, Inc.for $1.65 billion. Chen received 625,366 shares of Google and an additional 68,721 in a trust as part of the sale. As of September 2021, the Google shares are valued at almost $1.77 billion.[10]
He and Hurley startedAVOS Systems,which acquiredDeliciousfromYahoo!Inc.[11]
Chen was listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists To Watch byAsian Scientist Magazineon 15 May 2011.[12]
Chen started the live-streaming food network Nom in 2016 along with Vijay Karunamurthy.[13]In 2017, Nom was shut down, with itsTwitterfeed switched to private and its Facebook account left idle since March 2017.[14]
Awards
[edit]Chen was inducted as a Laureate ofThe Lincoln Academy of Illinoisand awarded theOrder of Lincoln(the State's highest honor) by the Governor of Illinois in 2018.[15]
Personal life
[edit]In 2009, Chen married Park Ji-hyun, a Google Korea product marketing manager, who changed her name to Jamie Chen. They now live inTaipei, Taiwanwith their two children. One son was born in July 2010.[16]The Chens are major supporters of theAsian Art Museum of San Francisco,where Jamie was appointed a trustee in July 2012.[17][18]In August 2019, Chen moved back toTaiwanand has resided there since then, along with his family.[19][20]
