Strathspey(Scottish Gaelic:Srath Spè,[s̪t̪ɾaˈs̪peː]) is a region of theScottish Highlandscomprising part of the valley of theSpey.It includes the towns ofAviemore,Boat of Garten,Grantown-on-Spey,andAberlour.
Strathspey, as traditionally defined, stretches from Upper Craigellachie (near Aviemore) to Lower Craigellachie (near thevillageof the same name).[1]Above it isBadenochand below it is the low-lying region of Speyside. The region is administratively divided betweenMorayand theHighlandcouncil area.
Speyside is one of the main centres of the Scotchwhiskyindustry, with a high concentration ofsingle maltdistilleriesin the region, including theGlenfiddichandBalveniedistilleries.Scotland's Malt Whisky Trailis a tourism initiative featuring seven working Speyside distilleries, a historic distillery and theSpeyside Cooperage.The concept was created in the early 1980s. The region is a natural for whisky distillers because of three benefits: it is close to barley farms, contains the River Spey and is close to the port of Garmouth.[2]The region also hosts theSpirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.[3]
